Preparation for a healthy protective style, such as a sew-in, should be taken seriously. After all, it is a protective style to promote growth and retention.
Before you get your sew-in, or any protective style, your hair and scalp should be thoroughly cleansed and moisturized with quality products (preferably ph balanced products). There are so many products that claim to be hydrating and moisturizing to your hair, but if you check the ingredients you will find them contradicting. Also your products should be aligned with the natural ph of hair which is about a 5.
One ingredient you should be aware of is silicone. Silicone serves no purpose but put a coating on your hair to make it look and feel healthy temporarily. Continuous use of a product with silicone will eventually cause a build up on your hair.
Sodium Chloride better know as table salt. This ingredient part of the reason your scalp is so dry and itchy. Salt is used in shampoos as a thickener, it is one of the cheaper thickeners that can be used. If the shampoo is cheaper its only right that they keep the production cost down with cheaper ingredients.
There are many other ingredients you should be cautious of such as parabens, sulfates, preservatives, fragrances, formaldehyde just to name a few.
So what should I shampoo and condition my hair with?
Both your shampoo and conditioner should have a ph between 4.5 and a 5.5.
Sulfate free shampoos are always best. However, a more natural surfactant such as Disodium Cocoamphodipropinate which is made from fatty acids of coconut oil is a healthier alternative
Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein strengthens the hair shaft by protein the attaches to the hair and penetrates down to the cortex.
You may see an ingredient called tetrasodium edta which is a chelator to prevent your products from growing mold and other microorganisms. This chelator is not harmful to us because it is not easily absorbed into our bodies.
Caprylyl Glycol is a conditioning and moisturizing agent derived from fatty acids found in coconut oil.
